Do you dislike looking at your power bills during the summer because of the inflation that your air conditioning causes? If you live in Los Angeles, you aren’t alone in this: the hot summers mean ACs that have to work most hours of the day to maintain a pleasant environment.
But just because an air conditioner needs to run long hours doesn’t mean that it has to cost a small fortune to run each summer. There are some simple tactics you can use to lower the high cost of low temperatures with air conditioning.
Call JW Heating & Air when you need professional AC services to help keep your bills in check. We offer skilled repairs, comprehensive maintenance, and installation of a variety of cooling systems. Many of our technicians are NATE-certified to bring you the quality service you need.
Some Techniques to Save on Summer Air Conditioning
- Change the air filter regularly: The air filter protects the inside of an AC from dust and dirt infiltration. But after a month of steady work, the filter will become heavily clogged and start to restrict airflow. If the airflow drops, it will cause the system to strain and draw more power to achieve the same results. Clogged filters are easy to prevent: simply change the filter for a fresh one every month during the summer, and every month you use the AC regularly.
- Maintain a steady thermostat setting: Thermostat control is important for effective energy use. It isn’t just a case of making sure to turn the thermostat off (or program it to turn off) when you aren’t home. It’s about keeping the thermostat at a steady comfortable temperature instead of swinging down to the lowest settings to try to cool the house down faster. Low setting, however, will not cool you down faster; they will only make the air conditioner’s compressor stay on longer and drain power. You should try to maintain a daytime temperature of 72°F, and raise it during the night. This can result in a 20–30% savings from your cooling bills.
- Schedule regular maintenance: Your air conditioning system must have an annual check-up and tune-up from a professional technician or it will begin to suffer from a drop in energy efficiency (studies have shown that without maintenance, a system will lose 5% efficiency each year) that will make for higher bills and an AC more likely to suffer from expensive repair needs. A single, hour-long maintenance check done each year will keep your air conditioning system running at 95% of its efficiency for most of its lifespan. Even if you have missed maintenance for a few years, it’s never too late to start.
