The end of the summer is here, but that hasn’t brought any cooler temperatures to Southern California. Quite the opposite, actually! You are probably using your AC more right now than you have at any other time of the summer. If you arranged for maintenance during the spring (something you should always do) then you can feel confident that the system will continue to work as it should until the heat wave slackens. But you still need to be cautious about potential trouble. Here are some tips from professionals to help you with ideal air conditioning care for the late summer.
Make sure you change the air filter
Please tell us that you have changed the AC’s air filter each month. If you haven’t, do it right now. The filter has had plenty of time over the summer to collect thick clogs of debris that will choke off the airflow and result in a spike in your utility bills—and possibly damage to components in the air conditioner’s cabinet. If your AC uses a permanent filter, remove it and clean it.
Check for obstructions around the outside condenser unit
During the summer, branches can start to grow closer to the cabinet that holds the compressor and condenser outside. There can also be a build-up of dirt, stones, leaves, etc. You want to keep the area around the condenser clear for at least a foot so the cabinet can effectively exhaust heat and not sustain damage from anything that might enter it.
Check on the thermostat
One reason to look over the thermostat is simply to see if you are programming it wisely: keep it steady at a setting in mid-70s to maximize your savings without giving up too much in comfort. Also see if it is responding correctly to programming. If it isn’t, it may be miscalibrated and in need of repairs.
