One of our major goals as heating and air conditioning contractors in Southern California is to help our customers save money through the installation of more efficient units. This is the reason that we partner with the HERO Program: we want to help people find affordable energy solutions for their homes.
The current line of ENERGY STAR-certified gas furnaces have remarkably high efficiency levels. Where the average furnaces once had AFUE ratings of 60%–80%, new models can score up to 97%, which can make a huge difference in your monthly energy bills.
Reasons that ENERGY STAR furnaces have such improved efficiency
A question that technicians sometimes hear from customers is why these newer furnaces can score so much higher on efficiency tests than older ones. True, technology is advancing, but what specifically makes these furnaces able to change natural gas into heat with minimal energy loss?
There are a couple of reasons for this rise in fuel efficiency:
- No more standing pilot light: A continually burning pilot light is a drain on fuel. New furnaces use electronic ignition systems that eliminate the need to keep burning the pilot light all winter.
- Variable-speed blowers: On older furnaces, the blower fan was either on or it was off. The newer blowers have different capacities depending on the heating requirements during the day and will change to the lower settings to conserve energy.
- Second heat exchanger: Condensing furnaces contain a second heat exchanger that takes the exhaust vapor from the first exchanger and draws more heat from it, rather than just letting it escape out the vents.
- Sealed combustion: A furnace must draw on air for the combustion process to work. A sealed combustion furnace doesn’t draw this air from inside your house, but takes it from outside. This not only improves efficiency, it’s also safer.
