One of the important jobs that we do is provide duct sealing services for homes. Leaks in air ducts are unfortunately common, and even the smallest leaks can account for a significant amount of heated or cooled air escaping before it reaches the vents. A duct system that has lost its airtight qualities will lead to a drop in air pressure and wasted money. As soon as you believe you have leaky air ducts, call us to come take care of it.
But wait… how will you know that you may have air duct leaks if you can’t see most of the ventilation system in the first place? Glad you asked! Below are the warning signs you can look for that will indicate it’s time to schedule professional duct sealing:
A spike in energy bills
The loss of cooled or heated air through the leaks—often up to 30% of the air moving through the ventilation system—wastes money. You pay to heat and cool that air, but it never reaches the rooms, so the HVAC system must work even harder. You’ll see this reflected in your monthly bills. If you energy bills are higher than they should be, you may have duct leaks.
Moldy and musty smells from the vents
Air leaks in ducts often open onto areas of the home that are dusty and even moldy, such as the space between walls and the attic. The air that enters the ductwork will have a peculiar odor to it, and you may notice this emanating from the vents.
If you notice that heating and cooling aren’t spreading evenly through rooms, check on the airflow coming from the vents. If it seems sluggish, it probably means a drop in air pressure that can result from leaky air vents.
