In 1938, the great Los Angeles writer Raymond Chandler published a classic detective story called “Red Wind.” It opens with a description that anyone who has lived in Southern California will find all-too familiar: “There was a desert wind blowing that night. It was one of those hot dry Santa Anas that come down through the mountain passes and curl your hair and make your nerves jump and your skin itch.” The paragraph then continues to talk about the strange changes in people’s behavior from these dry winds.
Today, we know that the “Santa Ana” winds of the fall do not actually cause major personality changes in people. But they can have negative health effects. You may not be able to do anything about the Santa Ana winds when you’re outside, but you can improve the air inside your home during the fall for a healthier household.
The UV Air Purifier
One of the major health dangers that the Santa Ana winds bring are spores that lead to symptoms resembling the flu: fevers, coughs, muscle aches, headaches, etc. This is sometimes called “Valley Fever.” There is a way to defend against these harmful spores: a UV air purifier, also known as UV germicidal lights.
While there are many types of air purifiers and filters available for homes, UV germicidal lights are specially targeted at organic pollutants, and this includes mold and other fungus spores such as the ones carried along on the fall winds. Instead of using chemicals to kill off these spores, UV germicidal lights use lamps that send out ultraviolet rays. These rays disrupt the cellular structure of the spores, either killing them or rendering them inert.
It’s a simple job for professionals to hook up UV lights in the HVAC system of your house. Once these lights are in place, you won’t have to think about them—just enjoy the cleaner, healthier air!
