What to Look For in a New Heat Pump

If you are looking for a new heat pump for your home, here are a few of the things to look for as you shop around:

  • Efficiency Ratings – Many people are intimidated by the efficiency rating. While they may look confusing, they are pretty basic. Heat pumps are given a couple of different ratings for each season. In winter, they are rated by the Heating Seasonal Performance Factor (HSPF) number. Anything above 7.7 will have the Energy Star sticker, so you know it is highly efficient. When used during the summer for AC, heat pumps are rated by the Seasonal Energy
  • Efficiency Ratio (SEER) rating like all other air conditioners. A SEER rating above 14 will be more efficient.
  • Ductless or Split System – There are two basic types of heat pumps: traditional split systems, and ductless heat pumps. Split system heat pumps require the use of ductwork, whereas ductless systems do not. You should consider the condition of your existing ductwork and the size of your home before making a choice.
