Heating Maintenance

Winter is fast approaching, and everyone is scrambling to make sure that their heating systems are in the best possible shape. As you know, fall is the best season in which to conduct preventative maintenance on your heating system. You may be wondering, however, what your HVAC technician does to ensure that your heating system runs smoothly all winter long. Read on for a list of some of the most common procedures for heating maintenance.

Thermostat

Every HVAC technician is going to check the thermostat when they conduct maintenance on the heating system. Since the thermostat is the control center of your heating system, it must be working properly. Otherwise, your heating unit itself could be perfectly fine and still not operate properly. If the thermostat is displaying incorrect information or doesn’t react to the temperature changes in the room, the sensor is likely malfunctioning. Your technician can open the casing and fix the issue from there.

Ducts

Cold spots and uneven heat distribution are common problems caused by duct leaks or blockages. Your technician will examine each vent first, to make sure that heat is getting through them. If one or more vents don’t seem to be working, the ducts will be checked for leaks and blockages. In most cases, it is fairly simple to repair problems with ducts.

Ignition System

Your heating ignition system is usually comprised of a pilot light, a burner, and a gas valve. The pilot light will be checked first, to make sure that it is lit and receiving enough fuel. Next, the unit will be turned on to check the burner and gas valve. If the burner doesn’t ignite, it might be dirty. This is fairly easy for your technician to fix. If the burner ignites, but the heating unit does not, it may not be receiving enough fuel from the gas valve. Your technician can adjust the gas flow, or clear the line if it is blocked by something.
