It is common for the ductwork in homes to sustain damage that will lead to them leaking air. Inferior initial installation of a ventilation system (which is unfortunately very common) often leads to the ducts developing gaps at connection points and losing internal air pressure. Aging ducts can also start to corrode, creating holes that allow the air inside the system to get out.
If you notice a drop in air flow from your vents, or detect odd, musty odors coming from them, you probably have damaged ducts that need professional sealing done as soon as possible. Leaking air ducts can be responsible for an enormous spike in your energy bills—in fact, they are a leading cause of home energy inefficiency.
The trouble with leaking air ducts
According to the U.S. Department of Energy’s ENERGY STAR program, approximately 20 to 30 percent of the air that passes through the ductwork system in a house is lost because of air leaks. Think about the sheer volume involved: that’s one-fifth to almost a third off all the air that you pay to heat or cool that doesn’t even reach you! It just escapes into closed off parts of the house where it does no good. Sealing up these leaks prevents a large amount of wasted energy.
The energy waste can be even greater than just that the air loss. Because the air pressure inside the ductwork drops due to leaks, it places additional stress on the HVAC system to maintain the appropriate temperature. This will cause the system to wear down faster than normal, leading to unnecessary repairs and even an early replacement. Having the ducts professionally sealed will protect you from upkeep bills on the AC and heater.
